Offering anonymity and cash rewards, CRIME STOPPERS solicits information through the media on all felony crimes in the community. To overcome the citizens' fear of involvement or reprisal, CRIME STOPPERS assures callers they may remain anonymous and in addition pays cash rewards for the Grand Jury Indictment of felony offenders.
The CRIME STOPPERS program is uniquely funded by private donations; no tax dollars are involved. Each program receives a state charter and tax-exempt status will be provided by the IRS. A board of directors, composed entirely of private citizens, establishes policy, the amount and method of the reward system and the raising of funds.
Austin County Crime Stoppers provides a special telephone number (979-865-2949) and is responsible for forwarding the information to the proper law enforcement agency. The telephone is located at the Sheriff's Office in Bellville and is answered by the civilian dispatchers on a 24-hour basis 7 days a week. Each caller is issued a code number to ensure anonymity. Should the information lead to an arrest and indictment of a felony offense, the Board of Directors of Austin County Crime Stoppers decided on the amount of the reward to be paid. The decision is made on the offence and the amount of property or drugs recovered. The paying of the rewards is handled by the Board of Directors ~ the police do not handle pay-offs. In order to publicize the Crime Stoppers program and maintain a highly visible profile in the community, a specific crime is selected once a month and a $1,00 cash reward is offered for one week for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the offender. This crime of the month is selected from unsolved cases submitted by law enforcement agencies across Austin County. In this way, it is hoped that through publicity persons with valuable information will be encouraged to relay that information to Crime Stoppers. You will remain anonymous. |
